SYNOPSIS

2 December 2018 marked the day the bells were rung for the last time, in heritage building, St Andrew's Cathedral.

After 175 years, a monumental change is about to take place. The 8 Apostles - magnificent bells, with the largest Andrew Bell weighing over 1,400kg, will be taken out of the tower and shipped to the United Kingdom for restoration works. The bells are to be tuned and shipped back to Singapore in time for the Bicentennial celebrations in August 2019.

But this is a new experience for many in this young nation. It is the first time since 1850s that these bells of such huge proportions will be lowered from the bell tower, then transferred out of a mere 50cm window on the second storey. The team employs help from John Taylor & Co in the UK to complete this feat.

Hardly touched or dusted for over a century, how will they take these giant sentinels out of the heritage building? While they bells head to the UK, work has to be done in Singapore. There's repairs to be done in the tower, and training for vergers to adopt the change-ringing method instead of striking clappers on the bells.

Fighting against rust, dust and time -  will the bells be back in time for Singapore's 200-year celebration?
